Family Living Center

Children can use a variety of dress up clothing and props as they role-play and participate in pretend play activities centered on family life.

Materials & Resources

Literacy Support

Dramatic Play Props:

Dress up clothes such as dresses, high heel shoes, briefcase, ties, vests, hats, purses, and men’s shirts

Child sized furniture, dishes, brooms, and other various house hold items

Dolls of various ethnicities,

Doll bed, high chair, and stroller

Pretend food including foods from different cultures

 

Oral language-role-playing and using language and vocabulary to express ideas, thoughts, and feelings, storytelling

Comprehension Skills-problem solving and critical thinking

Story concepts-understanding plot, character, and setting

 

 

Literacy Props:

Note books, envelopes, pencils, pens, a telephone, coupon books, coupon sorter, junk mail, checkbook,

 

Oral language- directing play, household vocabulary

Functional use of print- writing mail, lists, taking phone messages, writing checks

Emergent reading- reading junk mail and coupons

Emergent writing- writing letters, paying bills, writing checks, making grocery lists

Environmental print:

Food packages (empty)

*Food packages from other countries

Cookbooks

Calendar

(*Labels and posters with print in Spanish or other languages will be included as much as possible)

 

 

Emergent reading- reading food boxes of familiar products like breakfast cereal

Children’s Books:

Books about families will be placed in the family living center to promote children understanding of families and the diversity that exists among families.  Books that depict families of other cultures as well as children with illnesses and disabilities are included to promote and inclusive atmosphere in the classroom.
