 Ten Silly Dogs

This is a cute story about dogs that reinforces number recognition and number order.

Extend the learning with some of these fun activities:

Dog Count: (Gather an assortment of stuffed dogs or some other toy dog.  You could make dogs from construction paper if you needed to.)

I Made a dog house out of a box and some tag-board.  Then I programmed bones I had cut from brown construction paper with the numbers 1-10, you can see I also wrote the number word on each one.  I laminated them.

The kids got to take turns picking a bone and counting that many dogs to put in the dog house.  Oops!  The dogs kept getting out of the house!  I played the song "Who Let the Dogs Out" -kids love this song.  So after each person had a turn we would take the dogs out again and give everyone a couple chances to count the dogs.  With older preschoolers we would do some simple Math, so instead of letting them out every time would add the dogs up to see how many we had in the dog house.  Other things I did were: one person would put the dogs in on their turn and another would subtract the dogs next time.  You may have to manipulate the amounts depending on how many toy dogs you have.

This isn't the box I originally used.  I had cut a door in my real dog house box.  But you get the idea.

Who Let the Letter's Out?:

This is a cute song Dr. Jean has done to the tune of Who Let the Dogs Out on her Kiss Your Brain CD.  I made a set of Alphabet Dogs to go with the song and I let the kids take turns putting the correct dog on the felt board.  You could use any kind of Clip Art or draw your own dogs.  These Dogs are from the DJ Inkers Kidillywinks Clip Art CD  www.djinkers.com  I laminated them and put a Velcro dot on the back.

Color & Number Dogs:

In this activity we reinforce the color's and number symbols.  Each child gets a copy of the Dog Handout and then I told the children we needed to find some more lost dogs, and that I would read the "Clues" so that we could find them all.  So I read the clues and instructed the children to color the dogs the correct color.  I let them know they could color the whole dog or just part of the dog or just his collar, what ever they wished.
