Guidance & Discipline

Positive guidance approaches to discipline are used in most early childhood programs. So whether your implementing Responsive Classroom, Whole Brain Teaching, PBIS, Pyramid Approach, Conscious Discipline, or a combination of strategies... you will find resources here that compliment any positive behavior support system.

Classroom Rules

Setting expectation in preschool is probably on of the most important pieces of a successful classroom management system. Children need clear, simple, easy to remember rules that they can follow every day! We always work with our students to come up with a list of "Rules" they think we should have in our classroom. Then we help them state them in the positive and come up with a list we can all agree to... which always comes down to these three main rules. We talk about what it means to be a learner, to be safe, and to be kind. Read more about creating classroom rules the Responsive Classroom Approach way!

Take a Break

Self regulation is one of the hardest and most important skills for young children to learn. We focus on helping children learn this important executive function skill by offering them a place in our classroom where they can go to "Take a Break" when they are struggling to stay focused or listen. The "Take a Break" chair sits just outside of our main group area and near our small group area. That way children can have a break yet still remain a part of the class. We teach this procedure at the beginning of the year so children know exactly what it looks like and how to do a break. The goal of taking a break is to help children begin to identify the feelings they are having when they struggle with self reevaluation and to give them a chance to get back on track on their own. IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE A PUNISHMENT!
This strategy is from the Responsive Classroom Approach! Read more about how to use the Take a Break strategy on their website!
